The µDAWN™  Multi-Angle static Light Scattering (MALS) detector performs absolute characterization of macromolecules eluting from UHPLC, determining molar mass and size independently of retention time and molecular reference standards. This instrument offers superb sensitivity over a wide range of molar mass, size and concentrations. In most respects the µDAWN is similar to the well-established miniDAWN™ TREOS™, a workhorse MALS instrument used in hundreds of labs around the world for characterizing proteins and other molecules smaller than 50 nm in radius.

Distinctly from the miniDAWN, the µDAWN is uniquely suitable for use in conjunction with UHPLC Size Exclusion Chromatography (µSEC-MALS) thanks to its small interdetector dispersion. In some cases it may be used with ion-exchange or other types of chromatography. Regardless of the specifics, the µDAWN produces minimal band broadening in order to maintain the narrow peaks typical of UHPLC.

The µDAWN and its companion Optilab® UT-rEX™ Refractive Index Detector interface to most standard UHPLC systems. As these instruments are based on the advanced technology of the miniDAWN TREOS and Optilab T-rEX, respectively, users may be confident in the underlying capabilities cited in thousands of peer-reviewed publications

Cytell™ Cell Imaging System is an intuitive benchtop instrument equipped with on-board data analysis and visualisation tools.  It streamlines and simplifies routine assays such as cell cycle and cell viability and efficiently delivers high quality, quantitative results.

Key to the simplification are the on-board Bioapps; pre-configured, easy to use software modules that automate all the steps from imaging and data acquisition through data analysis, visualisation and report generation. The Cytell cell imaging system is compact and small enough to sit on a benchtop.

Cytell can image a wide variety of sample formats including slides, petri dishes, T-flasks and microplates. Compatible GE Healthcare Life Sciences reagents and kits are available, although Cytell is an open system and therefore provides the flexibility to create customized protocols based on other suppliers’ reagents.

BioApps currently available include:

  • Digital Imaging BioApp: Acquire fluorescence and transmitted light images of samples in plates, flasks, Petri dishes, or slides.
  • Automated Imaging BioApp: Automatically acquire high-quality fluorescence and transmitted light images from an entire multiwell plate in minutes.

For many years the Zinsser minilab has been an important component as a teaching aid in chemistry lessons in schools and universities. Now, with improvements to the product and above all with enhanced documentation, the new minilab presents a huge number of new research opportunities for any user.

Even though in the modern fine chemical industry and in pharmaceutical research and development where the smallest possible sample and reagent volumes are used (from a few mls and µls), for practical teaching, the experimentation often takes place in the front of the whole lesson with the use of larger volumes - up to 100mls - in schools and universities.

Containing an innovative set of glass equipment, the Mini Lab „lab in a suitcase“ is now used in many schools in different countries. There is now a new manual available for Mini Lab which includes more than 40 experiments - from basic operations such as distillation, filtration etc to complex syntheses such as colorants as designed by Prof. Michael Schallies. The instructions for the equipment configuration are easy to understand and are explained by simple drawings. General tips for the implementation of single experiments, material notes as well as danger symbols for the reagents are also included in the test description. The expected experimental results are also described in detail and partly documented with pictures or graphics. In the appendix of the manual there are detailed explanations of the potential dangers and also safety tips.

Current Owners of the Mini Lab can have a new updated manual for a small nominal charge.

Today, embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) represent the most significant types of pluripotent stem cells (PSC).

In the beginning, ESC were cultured on feeder cell layers, primarily murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEF), in non-defined culture media containing fetal calf serum (FCS). Later on, FCS would be replaced by somewhat more defined serum replacements and the introduction of extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings supporting self-renewal of ESC allowed for feeder-free culture using feeder-cell conditioned medium. However, the culture process remained time-consuming, laborious and poorly defined.

In recent years PSC-culture has experienced significant technical progress. Chemically defined media compositions became a standard, followed by the first xeno-free defined formulations. However, all these culture systems still depended on non-defined, xenogenic and poorly standardized ECM preparations – a contradiction in terms when using defined / xeno-free media. Importantly, research recently overcame this hurdle, identifying natural as well as synthetic ECM molecules and peptides that support undifferentiated PSC-expansion. Scientists are now capable of completely defined / humanized derivation and culture of hPSC.

Despite these recent technical advancements, the established hPSC culture systems still share unfavourable properties. Most of them use supra-physiologically high amounts of growth factors and / or contain substances purified from human or animal origin. In addition animal-derived and / or non-defined ECM is used. The PromoCell hPSC Growth Medium DXF consequently eliminates these disadvantages:

  • Chemically defined / xeno-free complete culture system
  • No human / animal derived components
  • Physiologically low in growth factors

This optimal culture environment allows for a well-controlled culture process, consistent and reproducible performance, robust support of pluripotency and improved cloning efficiency.

In combination with the extracellular matrix hPSC-ECM DXF and the hPSC Dissociation Buffer DXF, PromoCell provides a defined and xeno-free complete culture system for human pluripotent stem cells.
