The new workstation has been developed as a cost-effective, modular, barrier separation system. The first allergen kits that will be launched by the company from Potsdam, Germany, are the foodproof® Celery Detection Kit and the foodproof® Gluten Detection Kit. More allergen kits for the detection of soy, peanut and hazelnut will follow soon. In combination with the foodproof® Sample Preparation Kit III for theextraction of plant DNA, this kits allows simple and safe detection of allergens in all kind of foods. Depending on the source of literature the prevalence of food allergies is between 2 – 4 % for adults and 4 -8% for children.
The foodproof® Sample Preparation Kit III allows the extraction of highly purified DNA even from complex foods or processed matrices. To validate the foodproof® Allergen Detection Kits final products, raw materials and swab samples have been successfully tested. The kit cannot be only used for foods, finished products and raw materials, but also for cleaning validations. In addition, BIOTECON Diagnostics has developed a standardized reference material, Allergen RM 800, to create a standard curve for exact quantification.
More allergen kits for the detection of mustard, sesame, lupine and crustacean will be developed next year. Also it is planned to develop multiplex kits, to detect up to three different allergen-parameters within one reaction.
Food allergens became more important, because the frequency in the population has grown in the last decades. The reasons are still not totally clear; often it is credited to changing environmental influences and diets. Even the smallest amounts of allergens can cause severe allergic reactions up to life-threatening symptoms. For the consumer, the only protection is avoidance. According to EU-regulation 2007/68/EG 14, different allergenic ingredients have to be labeled in Europe on the products. Until now there is no threshold value in Europe or elsewhere. Therefore, the zero tolerance rule applies, even foods that only contain traces of allergens have to be labeled accordingly.

Kleenpak II sterile connectors allow for the dry connection of two separate fluid pathways, while maintaining the sterile integrity of both, even in an uncontrolled environment. The connector consists of a male and a female connector, each covered by an aluminum peel-away strip that protects the port and maintains the sterility of the sterile fluid pathway prior to connection.
The Kleenpak II sterile connector has been designed to allow for the connection of large processing equipment in order to obtain fast, safe and reliable sterile transfer of large volumes.With this sterile connector, large single-use systems ( > 100 L), such as the AllegroTM systems, will be operated at much faster speeds. There will be minimal fluid restriction in thetubing lines.

This instrument offers superb sensitivity over a wide range of molar mass, size and concentrations. In most respects the µDAWN is similar to the well-established miniDAWN™ TREOS™, a workhorse MALS instrument used in hundreds of labs around the world for characterizing proteins and other molecules smaller than 50 nm in radius.
Distinctly from the miniDAWN, the µDAWN is uniquely suitable for use in conjunction with UHPLC Size Exclusion Chromatography (µSEC-MALS) thanks to its small interdetector dispersion. In some cases it may be used with ion-exchange or other types of chromatography. Cytell™ Cell Imaging System is an intuitive benchtop instrument equipped with on-board data analysis and visualisation tools. It streamlines and simplifies routine assays such as cell cycle and cell viability and efficiently delivers high quality, quantitative results.
Key to the simplification are the on-board Bioapps; pre-configured, easy to use software modules that automate all the steps from imaging and data acquisition through data analysis, visualisation and report generation. The Cytell cell imaging system is compact and small enough to sit on a benchtop.
Cytell can image a wide variety of sample formats including slides, petri dishes, T-flasks and microplates. Compatible GE Healthcare Life Sciences reagents and kits are available, although Cytell is an open system and therefore provides the flexibility to create customized protocols based on other suppliers’ reagents.

Containing an innovative set of glass equipment, the Mini Lab „lab in a suitcase“ is now used in many schools in different countries. There is now a new manual available for Mini Lab which includes more than 40 experiments - from basic operations such as distillation, filtration etc to complex syntheses such as colorants as designed by Prof. Michael Schallies. The instructions for the equipment configuration are easy to understand and are explained by simple drawings. General tips for the implementation of single experiments, material notes as well as danger symbols for the reagents are also included in the test description. The expected experimental results are also described in detail and partly documented with pictures or graphics. In the appendix of the manual there are detailed explanations of the potential dangers and also safety tips.
