INFORS HT

The new Bioreactor Cultivation Video Guide from INFORS HT illustrates the operational steps using the Minifors and Labfors bench-top bioreactors as examples.

INFORS HT

E-Learning: Bioreactors Made Easy!

The video instructions allow students and newcomers to fermentation to run laboratory experiments on their own. These instructions were compiled in co-operation with the University of Applied Sciences, Esslingen, (Germany) and are now available from INFORS HT.

The Cultivation Video Guide takes the user through the bioprocess step-by-step through short video clips and numerous photographs and diagrams. The guide accompanies the user through the entire bioprocess from the preparation of the pre-culture and steps to get the bioreactor ready to the actual fermentation process.

The idea was conceived by Prof. Dr. Richard Biener, University of Applied Sciences, Esslingen (Germany), since bioreactors can be damaged easily if handled inappropriately. "The operation of a bioreactor requires comprehensive training," according to Dr. Biener. "The students are excited about the instructions since complex operating steps can be shown much more comprehensibly in a video sequence". The instructions make the students more confident in the operation of the bioreactor allowing them to work more on their own and independently in the laboratory.

Dr. Burkhard Feigel (Managing Director Infors GmbH), confirms: "Younger users especially get detailed instructions without any preliminary training which allows them to perform their tasks more easily and without external help. The advisers see the special benefit in the fact that students and pupils make fewer operating errors and there are fewer defects. Basically, the instructions are very well-tried and proven in educational settings and are a type of support that is welcomed by advanced users as well."

The Cultivation Video Guide for Minifors and Labfors bioreactors is now available from INFORS HT.

PromoCell

Today, embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) represent the most significant types of pluripotent stem cells (PSC).

PromoCell GmbH

In the beginning, ESC were cultured on feeder cell layers, primarily murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEF), in non-defined culture media containing fetal calf serum (FCS). Later on, FCS would be replaced by somewhat more defined serum replacements and the introduction of extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings supporting self-renewal of ESC allowed for feeder-free culture using feeder-cell conditioned medium. However, the culture process remained time-consuming, laborious and poorly defined.

In recent years PSC-culture has experienced significant technical progress. Chemically defined media compositions became a standard, followed by the first xeno-free defined formulations. However, all these culture systems still depended on non-defined, xenogenic and poorly standardized ECM preparations – a contradiction in terms when using defined / xeno-free media. Importantly, research recently overcame this hurdle, identifying natural as well as synthetic ECM molecules and peptides that support undifferentiated PSC-expansion. Scientists are now capable of completely defined / humanized derivation and culture of hPSC.

Despite these recent technical advancements, the established hPSC culture systems still share unfavourable properties. Most of them use supra-physiologically high amounts of growth factors and / or contain substances purified from human or animal origin. In addition animal-derived and / or non-defined ECM is used. The PromoCell hPSC Growth Medium DXF consequently eliminates these disadvantages:

  • Chemically defined / xeno-free complete culture system
  • No human / animal derived components
  • Physiologically low in growth factors

This optimal culture environment allows for a well-controlled culture process, consistent and reproducible performance, robust support of pluripotency and improved cloning efficiency.

In combination with the extracellular matrix hPSC-ECM DXF and the hPSC Dissociation Buffer DXF, PromoCell provides a defined and xeno-free complete culture system for human pluripotent stem cells.

BIOTECON

To fulfill its responsibility towards the consumer, BIOTECON Diagnostics decided to develop high-quality detection kits for food allergens.

BIOTECON Diagnostics

To fulfill its responsibility towards the consumer, BIOTECON Diagnostics decided to develop high-quality detection kits for food allergens. Therewith, the well-known and respected spectrum offoodproof® real-time PCR kits is extended by another interesting product division.

The first allergen kits that will be launched by the company from Potsdam, Germany, are the foodproof® Celery Detection Kit and the foodproof® Gluten Detection Kit. More allergen kits for the detection of soy, peanut and hazelnut will follow soon. In combination with the foodproof® Sample Preparation Kit III for theextraction of plant DNA, this kits allows simple and safe detection of allergens in all kind of foods. Depending on the source of literature the prevalence of food allergies is between 2 – 4 % for adults and 4 -8% for children.

The foodproof® Sample Preparation Kit III allows the extraction of highly purified DNA even from complex foods or processed matrices. To validate the foodproof® Allergen Detection Kits final products, raw materials and swab samples have been successfully tested. The kit cannot be only used for foods, finished products and raw materials, but also for cleaning validations. In addition, BIOTECON Diagnostics has developed a standardized reference material, Allergen RM 800, to create a standard curve for exact quantification.

More allergen kits for the detection of mustard, sesame, lupine and crustacean will be developed next year. Also it is planned to develop multiplex kits, to detect up to three different allergen-parameters within one reaction.

Food allergens became more important, because the frequency in the population has grown in the last decades. The reasons are still not totally clear; often it is credited to changing environmental influences and diets. Even the smallest amounts of allergens can cause severe allergic reactions up to life-threatening symptoms. For the consumer, the only protection is avoidance. According to EU-regulation 2007/68/EG 14, different allergenic ingredients have to be labeled in Europe on the products. Until now there is no threshold value in Europe or elsewhere. Therefore, the zero tolerance rule applies, even foods that only contain traces of allergens have to be labeled accordingly.

Dr. Kornelia Berghof-Jäger, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Germany-based corporation BIOTECON Diagnostics therefore announced that „the expansion of our product portfolio by test kits for the detection of food allergens is a consequent continuation of our strategy to cover all aspects of food safety diagnostics bymolecular methods.“

„The new product line allows the users of our foodproof® system to enter new markets with the existing laboratory equipment without any additional financial investments.”  emphasizes Alois Schneiderbauer, Chief Business Officer (CBO) of BIOTECON Diagnostics stated.

Now the LabCIP is available in a new design: the smaller housing can be stowed away to save space, yet retains its full functionality. It means that INFORS HT offers the modern researcher not only significant time savings, but also more space in the lab.

The Labfors with LabCIP bench-top bioreactor is revolutionising the biotechnology industry. As the world’s first self-cleaning, self-sterilising bench-top bioreactor, it not only saves users the tiresome job of cleaning and sterilising the bioreactor but also doubles the throughput rate. The LabCIP can perform its work overnight, making the Labfors ready to use again first thing the next day. This reduces the down time of the bioreactor to a minimum, allowing users to concentrate on their research.

And now the LabCIP is available in a new design: the reduction in overall height, allowing it to be stowed away to save more space, while retaining full functionality. It means that INFORS HT offers 21st Century capability in two key areas - saving time AND space.
