University of Bielefeld and Unilever in cooperation
Rotterdam/Bielefeld – Microbial genome researchers from University Bielefeld have formed a research collaboration with the Dutch-British cosmetics giant Unilever in the field of deodorants. The partners will identify new deodorant compounds, which reduce the growth of the skin bacterium Corynebacterium jeikeium, on the basis of the results of a comparative whole genome microarray analysis. The research group under Dr. Andreas Tauch and Prof. Alfred Puehler identified increased expression of 86 genes, when they supplied bacteria cultures with high concentrations (5 mg/ml) of the active deodorant ingredient 4-hydroxy-2-methoxybenzyl alcohol. They now want to elucidate how the drug resistance determinant cmx as well as the virulence factors sapA and sapD influence the growth rate of the bacteria.
