Sinking interest in GM research
Ispra – Research on GMOs in Europe is falling sharply, according to the EU’s registry for the deliberate release of GMOs at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Italy). In the first six months of this year, releases slid by over 35% compared to the first half of 2010. The decrease doesn’t seem to be due to GMO scepticism from some EU countries, but instead to reflect a general decline in Europe. Whilst most EU countries had fairly stable numbers of deliberate releases, there was a quantitative decline in Spain: from 45 releases in the first half of 2011, 25 were carried out there. In 2010, 47 of the 70 EU GMO releases took place there.
