Blood brothers take vow to help

17.12.2011

Porvoo/Chalfont St. Giles – GE Healthcare and Neste Jacobs have formed a strategic alliance to drive worldwide self-sufficiency in blood plasma fractionation. Finnish-based Neste Jacobs Oy, a global expert in plant engineering design and construction, will combine its expertise with GE Healthcare to offer governments and pharmaceutical companies aid in the construction of plasma fractionation plants. Together, the companies want to provide an integrated, cost-competitive “turnkey” approach for the construction of such facilities to help meet rising worldwide demand for these potentially life-saving products. “Combining the unique competencies and know-how of our respective companies will help secure the delivery of turn-key solutions to the plasma products industry, including construction of complete green field facilities,” says Jarmo Suominen, Managing Director of Neste Jacobs. The global demand for blood plasma products is predicted to grow from US$13bn in 2009 to an estimated US$26.5bn by 2015. Meanwhile, health care providers in many countries – especially emerging nations – are already unable to meet demand. The World Federation of Hemophilia, a global network of healthcare providers, national hemophilia associations, people with hemophilia and their families, estimates that 400,000 people live with the disease worldwide, and that only around 25% of them receive adequate treatment. Olivier Loeillot, General Manager of Enterprise Solutions at GE Healthcare Life Sciences, calls the alliance “a big step forward in bringing simple yet vital healthcare to people who, up to now, have been denied these treatments.”
