Reshaping the gut microbiome could herald new treatments for bowel diseases

24.08.2010

Barcelona – Spanish researchers have analyzed the long-term effects of gut bacterial transplantation in rats, suggesting this approach might be working for inflammatory bowel conditions such as Morbus Crohn or Colitis ulcerosa (Genome Research, 24 August). In contrast to approaches that use pre- or probiotics, direct transplantation of gut microbiota from a healthy donor to an ill recipient seemed to have a long-term effect on the composition of the gut microbiotica, according to Chaysavanh Manichanh, lead author of the paper. Using rats as a model system, the researcher from University Hospital Vall d'Hebron and colleagues from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona found that the donor bacteria profile persisted in donor rats longer than three months after transplantation and that no antibiotic pretreatment was necessary to establish this effect.
