Price for two biotechs

16.05.2007

Porto – Two Portuguese biotech companies have won the national idea contest for bio-entrepreneurs (Concurso de Ideias Bioempreendedor 2006), organized every year by the Portuguese Association of Bioindustries (APBio) and the government agency, the Institute for the Support of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (IAPMEI)
At the end of April, Infogene, a spin-off from the Institute Pedro Nunes at Coimbra, and Gene Predit Lda, a biotech start-up located in the Biocant incubator at Catanede since its foundation last year, each received the prize money of a5,000.
Gene Predit focuses on biomarker identification and screening for pharmaceutical compounds for these new targets. For these purposes, the company relies on comparative in-silico- and in-vivo genomics.
Infogene puts its focus on genetic studies in the area of cancer. The company has developed a non invasive home-brew test for the detection of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the most common cause of cervical cancer, and a test for detection of colorectal and uterus cancer. The alternative to the common Pap test for HP-Virus detection will be launched this September, according to the company.
