Portugal: Closer ties with the Subcontinent
Lisbon – Portugal’s “Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia” (FCT) is to channel funding into collaborations between Portuguese and Indian life science companies and research within the networking pilot programme “New Indigo” (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/cooptrans/eranets/newindigo/). The initiative, which provides up to EUR50,000 of funding for workshops and a two-month researcher exchange programme, will be dedicated to projects that focus on “biomarkers and diagnostics”, “bioinformatics for health”, and “structural biology for health”. The overall aim of its 1st call is to establish high-quality research networks and to strengthen existing contacts in order to initiate and prepare joint projects. New Indigo is also aimed at identifying research hotspots in Europe and in India, and sharing experience with other geographic ERA-Nets. Proposed projects have to involve at least two European partners and one from India. The initiative is currently supported through national funds from Austrian, French, German, Indian, Dutch, Spanish, Turkish, and Portuguese research budgets. Potential Indian partners can be researched at www.newindigo.eu/info/india.html. Preregistration for this first NPP call on biotechnology and health is March 8th (2010).
