German-Brazilian biopolymer alliance established
Willich – Brasilian biopolymer producer Braskem and German bioplastics compounding specialist FKuR GmbH, have signed a compounding agreement for green polyethylene. The tailor-made product will be a first in Europe, according to the two companies. With FKuR as a partner, Braskem wants to increase its European market share and develop new high value compounds for a diverse range of applications. „We chose FKuR as a partner because they have extensive compounding experience with polyolefins and bioplastics“, said Fabio Carneiro, Renewable Chemicals Commercial Officer at Braskem. Braskem was the first company to manufacture LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) from renewable resources. The ethanol comes from sugarcane produced in Brazil. Green PE is 100% recyclable using existing processes, says Braskem. In addition, because Green PE is not biodegradable, the carbon dioxide fixed during the sugarcane cultivation process remains sequestered for the bioplastic´s entire life cycle. It also has the same technical properties and processability as fossil-based polyethylenes which makes conversion to the green variant a simple process.
