Cognis launches Novel Food milk in China

17.08.2010

Monheim – German supplier of specialty chemicals and nutritional ingredients Cognis has launched the first milk for reducing blood cholesterol on the Chinese market. The novel food, which is enriched with natural phytosterols, will be marketed by Meng Niu, the largest milk company in China, and will be available at major food stores. Cognis’ phytosterols are approved in many countries, and are marketed under the ingredient brand names Heart Choice® in North America and Vegapure® in other regions of the world, including China. Cognis announced in May that Health Canada has also granted Novel Foods Approval for Cognis‘ plant sterols, paving the way for the launch of cholesterol-lowering foods and beverages in that country. The firm’s phytosterols have been clinically proven to lower cholesterol by up to 15 percent, a health claim that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Cognis claims that its milk provides a significant contribution to a healthier and more balanced diet pattern, and can help reduce the risk of cholesterol-related heart disease.
