France builds white biotech pilot plant
Toulouse – Three French research clusters have earmarked EUR20m to build a pre-industrial demonstration plant in the area of white biotechnology. The new facility, named Toulouse White Biotechnology (TWB), will test the feasibility of industrial production of second-generation biofuels, chemical intermediates, biopolymers and biomaterials. It is to be run by a consortium of 15 companies – including Total, L’Oréal, Michelin, Veolia, Sofiprotéol Roquette and Syral, three donors (Aba, Seventure, Sofinnova) and two Pôles de Compétitivité. The demonstration plant will be part of the Toulouse-based Laboratory for Biological Systems and Process Engineering (LISBP), in which 270 researchers from the Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), the Institute for Applied Sciences (INSA) and the Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) will work together.
