First GM harvest
Prague - In 2005, Czech farmers were allowed for the first time to plant Bt corn (MON 810), which is marketed under the name 'YieldGard Cornborer' and distributed by Pioneer Hi-Bred. As a result, this fall over 60 farmers will harvest Bt MON810 maize on a total acreage of about 300 ha. The Bt maize is one of 18 crops that have already been approved for cultivation in the EU before its moratorium on new GMO authorizations, which was in effect until last year.
Czech farmers worry however about the marketing of products made from biotech products. Even though milk from animals fed on biotech maize does not have to be GM-labeled by law, retailers will require dairy plants to certify that their animals were not fed on biotech products
Currently BASF is performing several small-scale field trials with potatoes and Monsanto plans to start field trials next year with 'YieldGard Rootworm' maize.
