GMO Field trial forbidden in Spain

18.08.2011

Vinaros – The Italian company Transactiva failed to start a field trial of a genetically modified rice variant in southeastern Spain. Although the National Commission on Biosafety had approved the field trial, the Committee on Genetically Modified Organisms in Valencia blocked the proceedings. Transactiva developed a GM rice to produce an enzyme to be used in a drug against the Gaucher disease. The Valencian Secretariat of the Department of Agriculture said that Transactiva didn't show further documentation to assess the damage of spreading. Local farmers welcomed the decision. "We don't want our products to be contaminated," said Ramon Mampel, secretary of the Unió de Llauradors i Ramaders de la Comunitat Valenciana. Transactiva went to Spain for the trials because in Italy, field trials are forbidden. The decision of the autonomous region threatens to damage Spain's reputation as relatively GMO-friendly bastion within the EU.
