Biosimilar promise

14.07.2009

Brussels/London – According to market researchers from Datamonitor, the biosimilar market is set to expand rapidly. The business analysis group says that by 2014, revenues in the 7 major pharmaceutical markets will hit the US$2bn mark following phase-out of key patents for epoetin-alpha, filgrastin, interferon-beta 1a and alpha, human growth hormone and insulin-glargine. Datamonitor says many large pharma firms have already prepared to enter the biosimilar market, while its analysts think that the high cost and extensive use of biologicals in conjunction with the growing need to curb pharmaceutical expenditure will provide it with considerable momentum. They also say that while Europe is a good testing ground they expect the US market to be more profitable.
