Genomes of Pathogens
Uppsala - Scientists at Uppsala University have sequenced and compared the genomes of two human pathogens transmitted by lice. The genomic comparison of Bartonella quintana (1,581,384 bp), which causes trench fever in humans, and Bartonella henselae (1,931,047 bp), which infects humans without causing symptoms, revealed a high degree of overall similarity. Both genomes are reduced versions from chromosome I of the highly related pathogen Brucella melitensis which causes human Brucellosis. Major differences are genomic islands coding for filamentous hemagglu-tinin in B. henselae and evidence for extensive genomic reduction in B. quintana.
