Probiotic strain reduces diarrhoea in kids

23.02.2012

Stockholm - Probiotics can help prevent diseases, Swedish researchers have found out. The results are in sharp contrast with all health claim judgements involving probiotics published by the EU's food watchdog EFSA up to now. The probiotic treatment of diarrhoea could lower the need for antibiotics in developing countries. As BioGaia, a biotech company, reported in a press release, a dose of Lactobacillus Eeuteri protectis significantly reduced episodes of diarrhoea in children. "These results confirm earlier studies with this probiotic strain in children with acute diarrhoea", said Peter Rothschild, President at BioGaia. "As the other probiotic tested in the study did not show any positive effects, this strengthens the importance of using the right strain when choosing a probiotic." The six month long double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed in Indonesia and included 494 healthy children aged one to six years. The results showed that the incidence of all diarrhoea episodes was significantly reduced by 32 per cent in the group supplemented by Lactobacillus Reuteri Protectis compared to placebo. In children with lower nutritional status (below median height and weight for the age group) Lactobacillus Reuteri protectis had significant effect on all episodes of diarrhoea. Another upside is that the kids given the probiotic strain didn't need so many antibiotics to cure the side effects of the disease.
