Malaria Prevention

23.11.2003

Madrid/Oeiras - A research team of Spanish, Portugese, Italian, and US-researchers have identified two novel anti-malaria target candidates, that are essential for Plasmodium sporo-zoites invasion to human hepatocytes - the first step in malaria infection. In early November the research team led by Prof. Maria Mota from Madrid University reported that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is secreted and activates its receptor MET when sporozoites migrate through hepato-cytes. This activates a signal pathway which induces re-arrangements of the host-cell actin cytoskeleton that is essential for the early development of the parasites within hepatocytes.
