Rome - A gene variation is responsible for the inherited early-onset form of Parkinson's disease, according to a multinational research team led by the Mendel Institute at Rome (Science, April 15). In family studies the scientists identified two homozygotous mutations within the pink1 gene that encodes the PTEN-induced kinase 1. The protein is localized in mitochondria and may protect neurons from stress-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death, the scientists suggest.
