Dublin - The indigenous biotech sector in Ireland has continued to grow and develop over recent years according to a new survey on biotechnology companies published by InterTradeIreland, the business development body of the island. After the report the sector comprises of 59 biotechs, primarily engaged in drug development (16), pharmaceutical services (7), diagnostics (21), agri-food applications (11), and bioenvironmental products. The 18 multinational and 41 indigenous biotech companies that employ 4,090 staff are clustered around Dublin, Cork and Galway (41) in the republic, and around Belfast and Coleraine (18) in the north. 26 of the businesses are micro-enterprises with less than 10 staff, 16 are small firms employing 11-50 staff - 25 are university spin-outs.
