France builds pre-industrial plant for White Biotech
Toulouse – Three French research clusters have earmarked EUR20 million to build a pre-industrial demonstration plant in the area of white biotechnology. The new facility, will test the feasibility of industrial production of 2nd generation biofuels, chemical intermediates, biopolymers and biomaterials. It is run by a consortium of 15 companies – including Total, L'Oréal, Michelin, Veolia, Sofiprotéol Roquette and Syral, 3 donors (Aba, Seventure, Sofinnova) and 2 Pôles de Compétitivité. The demonstration plant is part of the Toulouse-based Laboratory for Biological Systems and Process Engineering (LISBP), in which 270 researchers from the Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), the Institute for Applied Sciences (INSA) and the Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) will work together. An additional EUR3.5 million have been earmarked for the Synthacs project, that aims at biologically production of methionine, an amino acid for the synthesis of animal food.
