Outline for rewarding creativity

21.02.2009

Helsinki – The Finnish Government has set up a new innovation policy. As its starting point, the Science and Technology Policy Council adopted the report “Review2008” in December, which outlines Finland’s new national strategy and development programme for the coming years.
According to the report, all existing policy measures will be redefined on the basis of an international assessment of the innovation system, scheduled to be completed in the autumn of 2009. Further aims include increasing research funding by up to 4% of the country’s GDP by 2011. In terms of research priorities, biotechnology is to be one of Finland’s major investment areas, and is to be promoted by the government along with other future-orientated sectors such as nanotechnology and environmental research.
As of the beginning of 2009, the Science and Technology Policy Council will be renamed the Research and Innovation Council. Its next comprehensive review will be drawn up in 2010.
