Leg up for biorefinery research

29.04.2009

Helsinki – The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes), and the forest-based industry organised in the Finnish Forest Cluster have announced the five-year-research programme “Future Refinery” (FuBio), a biorefinery project with a total budget of about EUR50m.
At the end of February, Tekes decided to provide a9m for the initial two-year period of the programme. “FuBio aims to generate innovations that can either be implemented as a part of existing industry operations, or ones that can open up entirely new wood-based value chains,” said Christine Hagström-Näsi, the CEO of Forestcluster Ltd. That entity is part of a broader Finnish effort to develop new biorefining competences and technologies under the umbrella of the Tekes BioRefine programme launched in 2007. Forestcluster Ltd. harnesses an extensive network of national research institutes, universities and enterprises. New potential end products such as bioplastics, new composite materials and various bio-chemicals are all in planning within the FuBio framework.
