Europe’s largest biodiesel refinery ramps up

01.10.2011

Rotterdam – Finnish oil refining company Neste Oil corporation has kick-started production in Europe’s largest renewable diesel refinery in Rotterdam. The plant has a capacity of 800,000 tonnes a year, and this will be ramped up on a phased basis. The Rotterdam plant will employ up to 150 people. The refinery can use most kinds of vegetable oils and waste fats as feedstock, including jatropha, camelina and soybean oil. A government-controlled company, Neste Oil said the Rotterdam refinery would raise the firm’s total biodiesel output to about two million tonnes a year. It already has one refinery in Singapore and two in Porvoo in Finland. The four plants are all able to produce renewable aviation fuel. Neste Oil says its “Next Generation biomass-to-liquid (NExBTL)” renewable diesel is a fuel that is compatible with all diesel engines and existing fuel distribution systems, and claims it offers good performance at low temperatures and can be used either blended with fossil diesel or on its own. One airline interested in the jet biofuel is Lufthansa AG. The German carrier is testing the biodiesel in a six-month trial on regular commercial flights.
